Alice Joyce (1890 - 1955)

"The Madonna of the Screen"

Silent movie star Alice Joyce was born in Kansas City, Missouri on October 1st, 1890, and was a fashion model and a telephone operator before appearing in films for the first time around 1910. During the 1910's she proved herself to be a charming, reserved, and dignified leading lady in many short films for the Kalem Studios, which eventually was bought out by Vitagraph Studios. Few of her earliest short films survive, but many of her feature films made in the 1920's fared better and are available for viewing today, though you have to search them out. Joyce was often paired in these years with actors Tom Moore and Carlyle Blackwell.

Alice was married three times, to actor Tom Moore, wealthy New Yorker James Regan, and then to director Clarence Brown. They divorced in 1945. She had two daughters, one with Moore and another with Regan.

Noteworthy feature length films for Alice Joyce were "The Courage of Silence" (1917), the original "Stella Dallas" (1925), "The Green Goddess" (1925, opposite George Arliss - she also starred with him in the talkie remake in 1930), "The Home Maker" (1925), "Beau Geste" (1926), "Sorrell and Son" (1927), and an early feminist role in "Dancing Mothers" (1926 - surviving) with Clara Bow. She also did films in the UK such as "The Passionate Adventure" (1924) and "The Rising Generation" (1928).

Called "The Madonna of the Screen" during her heyday, Joyce saw her career wind down with the coming of sound. Her last film was "Song o' My Heart", an early 1930 talkie which survives.

Alice retired from the screen to raise her teenage daughters, and to do stage work. She was well off at this point and didn't really need to work in pictures any longer. Alice Joyce died of heart failure on October 9th, 1955. ~ Copyright © 2004 goldensilents.com

Vintage Bio from "Who's Who On The Screen" (1920): "Alice Joyce came to fame as "The Kamen Girl" but it was under Vitagraph direction that her own name became a household word. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1890 and was educated in Annandale, Va. She has hazel eyes, thick brown hair, weighs a hundred and twenty pounds, and her height is five feet seven inches. Her recent pictures "The Sporting Duchess", "Dollars and the Woman", "The Prey" and "The Vengeance of Durand" all won her increased honors, the reception accorded these pictures proving her popularity. Miss Joyce is a great theater-goer. Because of her madonna-like face the public know her best as "The Madonna of the Silver Sheet.""
