Mack Swain, Silent Film Comedian - goldensilents.com

Mack Swain (1876-1935)

Rotund, jovial silent film clown Mack Swain was born February 16th, 1876 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He entered show business at a young age and toured with minstrel shows, vaudeville troupes, and stock companies. In 1913 Mack joined Mack Sennett's Keystone comedies. Standing 6'2" and weighing 280 pounds, he excelled at slapstick comedy. He supported featured players such as Mabel Normand and Charles Chaplin. In 1914 he began starring in his own comedy series, portraying "Ambrose", an energetic big eyed lout with a huge mustache, partnering with fellow comedian Chester Conklin as "Mr. Walrus." The duo's best film together was "Love, Speed, & Thrills" (1915). In the late 1910's Mack's career looked like it might be finished, but his friend Chaplin stepped in and revived it, giving Mack supporting roles in many of his features, such as the classic "The Gold Rush" (1925), where he played the starving prospector who imagines The Little Tramp to be a chicken dinner. Mack went on to play character parts in films such as Lon Chaney's "Mockery" (1927) and John Boles' "The Last Warning" (1929). He was married once, to Cora King and had no children. In 1932 a film he was in called "Stout Hearts and Willing Hands" was nominated by the Academy in the category Best Short Film. It co-starred former Keystone actors such as Chester Conklin, Hank Mann, Harold Lloyd, Bobby Vernon, and Ben Turpin. His last film was 1935's "Bad Boy." After this film Mack retired from the screen and died from heart failure in Tacoma, Washington, on August 25th 1935. ~ Copyright © 2004 goldensilents.com
