Chester Conklin, Silent and Sound Film Actor - goldensilents.com

Chester Conklin (1886-1971)

What a funny, funny fellow, he always makes me laugh. Silent film comedian Chester Conklin was born Chester Cooper Conklin on January 11th, 1886 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Work in vaudeville, stock, and as a circus clown prepared Chester for his career as a film slapstick comedian, beginning with a role in 1913's "Hubby's Job." This mischievous fellow with the walrus mustache appeared in Charlie Chaplin's first film with Keystone, "Making A Living" (1914), and legend has it that he helped Charlie develop his Little Tramp costume for the very first time. He worked at Keystone and Majestic studios for the first three years of his career, was a Keystone Kop for awhile, and later freelanced with different film companies such as Ince, First National, Goldwyn, Chadwick, and Paramount. He appeared with such stars as Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, Mabel Normand, Constance Talmadge, Pola Negri, W.C. Fields and many more, always adding his own spark of mayhem and humor to any scene he was in. His career continued well into the sound era, his last film made in 1966. Unassuming, plain little Chester was married four times, to Minnie Goodwin from 1913 till their divorce in 1933, to Margherita Rouse from 1934 until her death in 1937, to Valda C. Genessee in 1949, and then to Catherine June Ayres Gunther from 1965 until Chester's death from heart failure on October 11th, 1971 in Van Nuys, California. He was such a delight; my face always lights up when he appears on screen. ~ Copyright © 2004 goldensilents.com
