Charley Chase - Silent Film Star - goldensilents.com

Charley Chase (1893-1940)

Silent film comedian and film director Charley Chase was born Charles Joseph Parrott in Baltimore, Maryland on October 20th, 1893 to Charles and Blanche Thompson Parrott, vaudeville performers. His younger brother James Parrot also went into show business and appeared in silent film comedies. Charley got his start with Mack Sennett's Keystone Studio and he can be spotted in early Charles Chaplin films such as the Sennett feature "Tillie's Punctured Romance" (1914), also with Marie Dressler. He worked as co-director on films with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Ford Sterling. Charley freelanced at a variety of other studios such as Christie, Fox and Pathé during the late 1910's and early 1920's. He most often played dapper young man-about-town roles or henpecked husbands. In 1921 he won a contract with producer Hal Roach, who had also hired his brother James Parrot. Charley was hired to direct stars like Snub Pollard but wound up performing in front of the camera instead. During the mid-1920's, working with director Leo McCarey, he starred in a series of clever two-reel pictures, such as "Crazy Like a Fox" and "Dog Shy" (both 1926). In 1929 he starred in two sophisticated and successful Universal silent features: "Movie Night" and "Modern Love." Charley survived the transition to sound smoothly and even sang in his early talkies. He co-starred in Laurel and Hardy's successful feature "Sons of the Desert" (1933). Charley finished his film career at Columbia Pictures, starring in more funny two-reelers and directing comedy stars such as The Three Stooges. Charley Chase was married once, to Bebe Eltinge, and had no children. He suffered from alcoholism, but this condition did not show up in his work on screen. He died of a heart attack on June 20th, 1940 in Hollywood, California at the age of 46. ~ Copyright © 2004 goldensilents.com
